Ingredients:

  • 1 medium organic onion, chopped

  • 1/2 cup fresh organic ginger root, grated

  • 1/2 cup fresh organic horseradish root, grated

  • 10 cloves of organic garlic, crushed or minced

  • 2 organic jalapeño peppers, chopped

  • Zest and juice of 1 organic lemon

  • Zest and juice of 1 organic orange

  • 2 tablespoons organic turmeric powder or fresh turmeric root, grated

  • 1/4 teaspoon organic cayenne powder

  • 2 tablespoons organic honey (optional, for sweetness)

  • Organic apple cider vinegar (enough to cover all ingredients)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare all ingredients by chopping, grating, or mincing as required.

  2. Place the prepared ingredients into a clean, quart-sized glass jar.

  3. Add the lemon and orange zest and juice, turmeric, cayenne powder, and optional honey to the jar.

  4. Fill the jar with apple cider vinegar until all ingredients are completely submerged and the jar is full to the top.

  5. Seal the jar tightly with a lid. If using a metal lid, place parchment or wax paper underneath to prevent corrosion.

  6. Shake the jar well to combine everything. Store in a cool, dark place, shaking daily, for 2-4 weeks.

  7. After the infusion period, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into another clean glass container, pressing the solids to extract maximum liquid.

  8. Compost the solids or repurpose them in recipes.

  9. Your fire cider is now prepared for consumption! Take 1 tablespoon daily to support immune health, or incorporate it into dressings, marinades, or sauces for added flavor.

Enjoy!

Fire cider is strong and may be diluted with water or juice as needed. Adjust the recipe to taste, and consider adding other herbs or spices for variation. Enjoy the zestful benefits of your homemade tonic!
