Required Equipment:
Saucepan
Whisk
Baking Paper
Thermomix (Optional)
Ingredients:
500 ml of liquid.
5 tablespoons of gelatin - I like
Liquid Options
Fruit Juice (unsweetened): Ideal for adding natural sweetness and flavor. Choose juices like apple, grape, or cherry for a hint of color and taste. Make sure it's pure juice without added sugars for a healthier option.
Water Kefir: A fermented, probiotic-rich liquid that's a great base for those looking for digestive benefits without added sweetness.
Coconut Water: A great alternative for those looking for a mild, slightly sweet flavor. It's also hydrating and adds a tropical twist to your marshmallows.
Herbal Tea (cooled): For a more sophisticated flavor profile, consider using cooled, strongly brewed herbal teas. Options like chamomile, hibiscus, or mint would be best!
Almond Milk or Coconut Milk (unsweetened): If you're looking for a non-dairy milk alternative that adds a bit of creaminess, unsweetened almond or coconut milk can be a great choice. These will give your marshmallows a slightly different texture and flavor.
Vegetable Glycerine: If you're looking for a sugar-free alternative that still adds sweetness, vegetable glycerine can be an option.
Coffee or Espresso (cooled): For an adult twist on marshmallows, use cooled coffee or espresso. This can create a delightful treat perfect for pairing with desserts that benefit from a coffee flavor.
Preparation Steps:
Pour the chosen liquid into a small saucepan. Gently sprinkle the gelatin powder over the surface of the liquid.
Wait for a few minutes to let the gelatin 'bloom.' This process allows the liquid to absorb the gelatin, giving it a wrinkled look.
Place the saucepan over low heat. Stir continuously until the gelatin fully dissolves. This should take just a few minutes.
Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Cooling is crucial to ensure successful whipping later on.
Transfer the cooled mixture to a mixing bowl. Use an electric whisk to beat the mixture for 5-7 minutes until it becomes light and fluffy. It might seem like nothing is happening at first, but patience is key! If you have a Thermomix, insert the butterfly whisk attachment, set it to speed 4, and mix for 5 minutes. Remember to remove the measuring cup and cover the opening with the steamer basket to prevent splashes.
Prepare a baking dish or glass dish by lining it with baking paper. Pour the fluffy marshmallow mixture into the dish, spreading it to your desired thickness.
Refrigerate the marshmallow mixture for at least 6 hours to set. Once firm, cut it into your preferred shapes and enjoy!
